A Letter to the King

Your Excellency,

Having completed the requested exploration and reconnaissance of the realm of Nightfall, taken by force from the Empire of the Sun by the Starsisters, daughters of the fell goddess Hai’lyn, I do hereby submit my report and my findings.  I trust you will find that your coin has been well spent.  I am currently collecting and organizing what I have learned, and I will soon present the results to you…upon reception of payment of course.

While my people are more adept at training killers than they are scholars, in these pages you will find a wealth of information concerning your enemies–the enemies of the whole world of Khumkato.  I have taken care to describe to you what I have seen and heard–the land, the people, the creatures, their customs–anything that I thought might be of use to your Excellency.

The twilight of the Starsisters harbors both wonders and horrors, both beyond imagining.  I have seen courage, beauty, and strength in the best of the remnants of the broken Empire.  In the day of the countryside, her people are still fair of heart, body, and mind, but they are broken in spirit and ground down under the might of the Starsisters.

The quiet valor of the people is only part of the tale I must tell.  I have walked with demons.  I have seen with my own eyes the monsters that previous generations of your people have only spoken of in whispers.  The creeping twilight subdues and corrupts the land and its inhabitants, turning all into creatures of darkness I had not imagined.

And I gather that this is only the beginning.  The immortal starsisters will not remain within the bounds of the Empire for many more generations.  They are coming, and you must prepare.  We all must.   I will hasten to send you my reports as the information is compiled.  If a mercenary may be so bold as to advise a king, I suggest that you share these reports with the other nations and begin building your alliances.  You will need them.

Syra’Or
